I dont know about that...
If English is the only language you know, masculine, feminine and neuter noun endings are going to be "foreign" to you, verb conjugation is much more complex and German has some very strange rules for word order in a sentence.

Any romanic (any languages descending from latin) language will help you more. Learning such a language first will make it a lot easier learning german. English isn't really that similar.

I tried learning German once. I even took lessons, but it was like a foreign language to me...

Besides German, the only other language I studied was New Testament Greek. So you can imagine what we used to say in Greek class...
