Well the case I am talking about is a newbie pilot, for lack of a better word, was trying to mine. The asteroid was not bugged. I was right next to him and had no trouble mining from the same asteroids. It also seems to me that once he had started the mining missions he was then able to successfully mine. But like I said earlier I have a character I can experiment with. I just haven't had time to do so yet as my 2 jobs have kept me from playing.

Its possible he could have been using blasters and not a mining laser :)

Come on give me a break! LOL

He had a proper loadout for mining.

Excuse me my ignorance in English, but what does the quoted sentence mean?

On a side note, I have several times happened to fire my cannons rather than my mining laser, now I have setup my toolbar in a better way, but ...

Hmm, how did you set up your toolbar?

That was another good question. I think I have to go into game and figure it out since it was not yesterday I mined asteroids, I usually pay for that service nowadays :D

But I believe I had all my cannons on 1,2,3,4 or something, and the tractor beam and mining laser just next to them, possibly at some F-keys. I gave them a toolbar of its own and most likely the same scheme, the most used buttons at 1,2,3,4,5 (I have the toolbar like bottom row 12345... and upper row is F1 F2 F3... and the most user just above W, the forward key of WASD). Have I confused everybody now? :D

Loadout may be the wrong word to use in this case. It might be better to say "His ship was properly outfitted for mining." Meaning he had a mining laser and cargo hold equiped, and possibly a tractor beam as well.

I have set up my keyboard to fire only the mining laser by setting the laser in "gun 1 slot" and mapping "1" to fire it.

Thanks, I suspected that. But having a pass to the gym is not the same thing as exercising ;)

I have been using an advanced X-Wing for mining with Mark III mining laser, tractor beam, Borstel/Incom weapon, and Hugh cargo hold (starfighter)(5500 capacity). This set up breaks chunks just fine and the mining laser and Borstel/Incom combo will handle any bandit including tier 5s.

Btw, the Admiral is on Corellia, Duaba Gurfel (sp?) for Rebel and 2 of the neutral pilots (RSF does Imp ace missions).

Bottom line here is that asteroid mining is not for noob pilots?

To be honest I think only "noob" pilots would have the patience to mine asteroids.
:)

However up until you hit Yavin space mining is pretty easy, Tier 1 and 2 opposition is really not much of a threat even to a lowbie pilot in a good Y-Wing and it is possible to mine one or two asteroids in Yavin space without any opposition if you are lucky and can avoid combat getting to them.

You have a point there Monty, asteroid mining bores me to tears.
Wrackspurt, you are probably right, the best mining ships are master or tier 4 levels, and defending yourself in a ship you have intentionally "gimped" probably takes some higher skills and equipment then a "newb" would possess.

Well, that's me, always getting in over my head in this game, whether it's this or mining on Dathomir with a character that can't possibly defeat those beastie, etc. My first house I had at 16th lvl on Dantooine, and there were Quenkers and other things out there that would literally chase right into the house, right up to the front door which would have killed me for sure. Then much later out I found a lake I could have all to myself to set up shop with a great view, but just east of the Jedi temple and populated with wandering lvl 80something Dark Jedi who don't even incapacitate, just outright kill. Oh yeah, then there was the time I decided to have a closer look at that Star Destroyer off Ord Mantell, and I lasted maybe 5 seconds against those Tier 9 Black Sun ships. Honestly, I don't know what my problem is.

I use a rihk ship with a mining lazer and a tractor beam and 1 gun for defence witch i found can be a pain so i try to bring a wing man with me for protection. This works best for me.

Also a tid bit of info i did not notice listed here is that using a tractor beam is faster for collection than with out it by about 50% !!

example

you come up to the astroid and start shooting once the first big piece breaks off turn on the tractor beam and try to come up behind the chunk then shoot it till it breaks into smaller chunks ( anywhere form 2-5 pices sometimes more) use the beam to pull these pices into your cargo hold. without the beam you have to chase these little pices down and shoot them into smaller pieces to collect them witch i think is a pain in the back side.

so bottom line to me is use a tractor beam and bring a wing man your collecting will take half the time :D

Yes Chactaw, you are right. This thread was orriginally part of the sticky "Asteroids and where to find them" which did contain a link to an asteroid mining guide. Someone suggested that the thread had gone away from the topic of the stickied thread and should be moved to its own. I saw the wisdom of that and moved the ship questions. I generally dont care if threads go off topic, but stickied threads should probably be kept "cleaner" then non sticked.

Well I finally got my non pilot toon to start the Corsec pilot and after my first mission I went asteroid mining. As Savacc suggested, you can mine without doing the Kashyyk space mining missions. I just used a Mark I Mining Laser and small cargo hold in the stock Scyck and was able to fill the hold in a few minutes.
